Pink eye, or conjunctivitis, is when the superficial layer of the eye (the conjunctiva) is inflamed. This can be due to a viral or bacterial infection or from an allergy. Most cases of conjunctivitis are caused by viruses and can coincide with flu-like symptoms. While viral conjunctivitis can be very contagious, it is usually not serious and resolves in 7 to 10 days without treatment. It is important during this time to not share any clothes or towels with others and to perform adequate hand hygiene so as to not spread the infection to others.
